The Healing Power of Reiki
Amanda Kelly
THERE IS AN ENERGY INSIDE ALL OF US THAT CAN’T BE SEEN OR TOUCHED, IT CAN ONLY BE FELT. THAT IS REIKI.
From my teens to my mid-twenties, I was living a life fueled by loneliness which led to a myriad of other symptoms such as anxiety, depression & debilitating digestive issues. Growing up with a mom who truly comes into her happiness in serving others through forms of energy work like massage therapy, reiki and aesthetics it was only a matter of time before my curiosity got the best of me. I started adopting more holistic ways of taking care of myself. I surrendered my need to control & let my body’s intelligence navigate its own healing process. That’s how I found Reiki.
There’s no quick & dirty version of a sustainable self-healing process my friends. It takes time, effort, intention, faith over fear and most of all your willingness. I began going to acupuncture, getting Reiki treatments and consciously arriving on my yoga mat daily. My body was responding so well! Aside from being a hyper energy sensitive person (an empath) I came to find that these alternative treatments to medicine were much more effective & nourishing. I not only felt a shift in my physical body, but I felt more balanced in my emotions which led me to find peace within myself which was something that seemed so foreign to me before. After settling into a new house, a new job and my marriage, the calling for me to pursue this type of energy work was loud & clear. It started with yoga teacher training which was the gateway to my Reiki training the following year!
Reiki is almost impossible to explain… (almost).
Reiki is an experience. Once you feel its healing power, you’ll understand.
The Japanese word REIKI translates to “life force energy.” We all have life force energy inside of us. We are all alive because of it. That life force flows within our physical body & even deeper into our subtle realms through the seven chakras (or seven main energy centers in the body that each relate to a life function). When these energy centers become blocked, renewed energy cannot enter often leading to illness. When these energy centers are left open, they become vulnerable to an excess of energy. As a result, our bodies cannot protect themselves from any toxic external forces.
Reiki is a non-invasive, subtle type of energy work that utilizes life force energy to heal others through the touch of the practitioner’s palms (or across time & space via distance reiki techniques). The reiki practitioner is a channel between the universe’s energy and the patient. As the practitioner, you surrender all control & intentions to the universe and are simply guided by that universal force. This is what makes Reiki so unique & special amongst the energy healing world! Through that life force energy transmitted into others, it is said to trigger the body’s natural healing process & bring balance & harmony back to those places of dis-ease in the body usually centered around the seven chakras. I like to call it a massage for the soul! We are physical beings so therefore; our consciousness lies in the physical realm and it’s difficult for us to grasp anything beyond that. Reiki though taps into our emotional & physic realms & works to heal the entire bodily system promoting wholeness of mind, body & spirit.
My experience with Reiki has shown me it can work to support healing in these areas:
- Mental illness, like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and more
- Addiction recovery
- Trauma recovery
- Stress-relief
- Insomnia
- Seasonal illness, (i.e. seasonal colds, allergies, headaches)
- Bodily aches & pains
- Personal growth & spiritual awakening
- Reworking toxic family and childhood patterns
EXERCISE
With your eyes closed, vigorously rub your palms together creating heat. Once you’ve built up that heat, separate the palms ever so slightly perhaps just the width of a piece of paper. Gradually keep separating the hands. Can you feel any tingling? Pulsating? Heavy, dense air? An electric humming? That’s Reiki energy!
