Love the Way You Move
Though Valentine’s Day has come and gone, everyday is an opportunity to love. With so much emphasis placed on showering our significant others with gifts and affection, it’s important we’re “filling our own cup,” so to speak, with love and affection as well. Self-love is an art and a practice, and it’s essential for our health and well-being that we foster self-love frequently and regularly. When we love something, we take care of it, so keeping our mind/body healthy is a gesture of love to ourselves.
Movement is one of the simplest ways to maintain a healthy mind/body. February is in the heart of Kapha season, and Kapha includes qualities which make it challenging to get up and moving. Cold, dark days are marked by a lethargy which often reflects the state we find ourselves in throughout the season. In order to balance Kapha and keep our mind/body functioning optimally, we need to dig a little deeper to draw forth the necessary energy to get our bodies moving.
Studies have shown the efficacy of movement in relation to health. In particular, regular exercise helps in reducing depressive symptoms, and I know from personal experience winter-time blues and seasonal depression are no joke! Weather doesn’t always permit for strolls through nature or a bike ride around town, but getting out to a yoga class can be just what the doctor prescribed. When the body starts moving and the lungs start pumping, we’re able to kick that seasonal depression to the curb and coast through Kapha season without it weighing us down.
So get yourself to a yoga class or out to the gym. Give yourself some love in the form of physical exercise. Fill your cup with love by taking care of yourself, and you’ll be better equipped to help fill your loved ones’ cups as well. As a wise being once said, “you can search throughout the entire Universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe deserve your love and affection.”
