6 Ways Your Children Can Benefit From Yoga Classes

  • Builds self-esteem and confidence. Receiving praise and encouragement is vitally important to the healthy emotional development of our children. (We all know that!) Yoga instructors are mindful masters of praise, appreciation and encouragement. It’s not a matter of being perfect. It’s a matter of having your physical efforts acknowledged and appreciated. Yoga builds confidence and self-esteem in children. In everyone, actually.
  • Fosters cooperation and compassion. Yoga is noncompetitive. In today’s fiercely competitive world, it’s comforting to have physical activities available to our children that don’t require someone to lose, so that someone may win. In Yoga, everyone wins. Everyone is important. Everyone succeeds.
  • Physically enhances their flexibility, strength and coordination. Yoga exercise creates the underpinning upon which other physical activities can build… dance, swimming, gymnastics, soccer or similar sport. In other words, Yoga can give your children the strength and flexibility they need to participate in other activities. They’ll have a leg-up compared to other kids of their own age. Guaranteed!
  • Improves concentration, focus and attention. It’s amazing to watch a child in Yoga class. They quickly catch on to the benefits of mindful concentration and learn to focus like a laser beam. In time, these skills carry over to school work and life in general.
  • Cultivates a peaceful, relaxed state of body and mind. You wouldn’t expect that with physical exertion relaxation would follow, but it does. Each Yoga class ends with a dose of quiet time that stills the mind and soothes the body. Kids leave class calm and relaxed, so they’re prepared to focus on the remainder of their day.
  • Teaches personal tools for stress management. Children live in a hurry-up world of school, homework and extra curricular activities. They have pressure on them to succeed, to conform, to excel, to make us proud, to balance busy lives… the same pressures that adults have… only in a child’s version. Yoga helps reduce that stress in children, the same as it does in adults. Children learn the useful tool of mindful breathing that will enable them to handle times of stress with grace.
